#Do people understand the impressions they make
on others or do their anxieties lead them to assume the worst?
Across nearly 10 years of research and tens of
thousands of observations, we have come to this answer: people underestimate
how much others like them, and this bias has important implications for how
people work together.
We make countless decisions daily. Essential to
this decision-making is conversation and dialogue. It involves talking to
oneself and conversing with others, making optimal decisions while respecting
each other's intentions. Moreover, negotiating within limited time requires
skill and practice.
Ø
Ø
Ø
Ø
#Try These Simple Negotiation Hacks
Negotiating effectively means proving that
you’re a collaborator, not an adversary. To do that, you need to demonstrate
that you’re attuned to your counterpart’s logic, emotions, and perspective.
These strategies can help.
Ø
Use short, simple vocal prompts. For example: “And?”
“Really?” “Then?” “Mmm,” “Uh huh,” “Go on,” and “Interesting.” The aim is to
nudge the other person to continue and make them feel understood.
Ø
Ask open questions. This helps you demonstrate your
interest in their position and buy time, gather data, clear up
misunderstandings, and defuse emotions. Good open questions start with “what”
and “how,” while questions that start with “why” tend to sound accusatory and
judgmental.
Ø
Reflect back—or mirror—the last few words used by your
counterpart. This is an easy way to demonstrate that you’ve heard them, keep
them talking, and create rapport. And by carefully choosing which words to
mirror, you can also steer the conversation in the direction you’d like.
Ø
Leave room for silence. Effective pauses give your
counterparts space to collect their thoughts, elaborate, or even vent in ways
that can be informative for you. Simply refrain from responding after they seem
to have finished speaking.
Ø
Ø
Ø
Ø

This emphasizes the importance of not only understanding
words but also non-verbal cues and emotions in effective communication and
relationship building. Even in business contexts where minimal relationships
are common, it's crucial in negotiations for both parties to share a common
desire to reach an agreement, which is key to success. Attempting to understand
the other person's position and perspective is extremely important in building
effective relationships and negotiating. Let's remember the importance of
understanding and respecting others, as well as the importance of positive
intentions in communication and negotiation.
#Riddle: A Message Beyond Words
A king was visited by an envoy from a
neighboring country. The envoy was tasked with delivering an important secret
message to the king. However, this message was highly confidential, and it was
forbidden to convey it verbally or in writing.
Standing before the king, without saying a
word, the envoy performed the following three actions:
The envoy pointed at their heart with their
hand, then stretched their hand towards the sky.
With a smile, the envoy pointed at their own
eyes, then intently looked into the king's eyes.
Finally, the envoy extended their hand, seeking
a handshake.
Through these non-verbal actions, consider what
message the envoy was trying to convey to the king.
Thank you. The other day, cherry blossoms suddenly bloomed.
Today, it is extremely cold. The answer to yesterday's riddle is
"thought" or "thinking." This riddle symbolizes the
importance of communication through words and the significance of having one's
thoughts and expressing them. Thinking is a process that springs from within,
and by expressing these thoughts in our own words, we can connect with others
for the first time. Today's riddle is about conveying emotions and intentions
beyond words. You might understand it better by actually trying.
