#4 Questions to Ask Before Making a Career Change Maintaining interest in your work is one way to keep engaged, but career change inevitably involves some risk. Before you embark on a new path, ask yourself these four questions.

1. What’s motivating this change? Sometimes, the answer is clear: you have a lifelong passion, and the time has finally come to commit to it. Other times, the desire to pivot might simply stem from dissatisfaction with your current job. Be clear about whether you really want to move into a new field or just escape your current situation.
2. What are small ways to test a new career? This could include informational interviews, job shadowing, reading books and memoirs from people in the field, and asking pointed questions about the best and worst parts of their jobs. These tactics will help you gain a clearer sense of both the risks and the rewards.
3. What’s my runway? In other words, how much financial leeway do you have to take a risk or a pay cut? Take a moment to plan the logistics of your pivot, which is the process of planning and preparation that includes financial planning, acquiring necessary skills and experience, and beneficial networking and industry research. Setting specific steps and a timeline for achieving your goals is crucial in this process.
4. What’s my fallback plan? Essential for your future success—and your ability to adapt if things don’t go as hoped or anticipated—is keeping a realistic view of potential obstacles. A fallback plan is an alternative plan prepared in case unexpected problems arise, including securing income if the career change doesn’t go as planned, expanding professional options, and strategies to deal with financial difficulties. This plan is a safety net designed to reduce risk and flexibly respond to uncertainties.

 

#在进行职业转换前应询问自己的4个问题 保持对工作的兴趣是保持投入的一种方式，但职业变更不可避免地涉及一些风险。在你踏上新路径前，问自己这四个问题。
